Audra Mcdonald stands out in the range of her talents and her versatility as an actor and singer. Audra McDonald who has won six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was named as one of Times magazine's 100 Most Influential People. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour to recognize achievements in the field. A luminous singer with an unmatched gift of emotional truth-telling, Ms. O'Connor is at ease on Broadway and on the stage of opera and on television. Aside from her theater work McDonald has also established a successful career as an internationally acclaimed recording and concert artist. She was born into a musical family. McDonald grew up within Fresno California and received her classical vocal training at New York's Juilliard School. After graduating, McDonald received the Tony Award Best Performance for a Lead Actress of Musical at Carousel at Lincoln Center Theater. In the following four years, acting in Broadway's most acclaimed productions, Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) as well as Ragtime (1998) in 1998, she earned two additional Tony Awards. She won her 4th Tony when she starred on stage in A Raisin in the Sun with Sean Diddy Combs. Then in 2013, she took home her 5th Tony as well as her first award in the Leading actress category. The year 2014 saw her make Broadway history, becoming an official Tony Awards most decorated performer when she won her sixth award for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role which also served as a basis for her Olivier Award-nominated 2017 debut in London's West End. Along with recording the record for the highest number of performances that an actor has won in a competition she was also the first person to receive the award across all four categories. Her other credits for theater are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) in which she made her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut, the show Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921, and all That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in Clair de Lune (2019) and Ohio State Murders (2023). McDonald's first appearance as a dramatic actor on television was on the Peabody Award-winning CBS show Having Our Say The Delany Sistersthe first 100 years. She went on to co-star with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the lauded 1999 remake by ABC and Disney of Annie as well as in 2000, she played a regular role on NBC's hit series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. Following the first Emmy nomination for her role in the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit, produced by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 on the drama about politics Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and starring Josh Brolin. In 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The following year, she became a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald earned a nomination for a Fourth Emmy in the year 2016 for her performance in HBO's production called Lady Day, at Emerson's Bar and Grill. The Bite will be a 6-episode drama focusing on a deadly epidemic co-produced with Spectrum Originals, CBS Studios and Taylor Schilling in 2021. McDonald initially played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in the CBS legal action thriller The Good Wife, in 2009. In 2018 she reprised her role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular on the series. Her performance received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. She currently guest-stars in Julian Fellowes' historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
